Exploring Enchanted Rock

3 Jan

It’s 2012!  Billy and I decided to start off the new year by being adventurous.  We have been wanting to go check out Enchanted Rock since we first moved down here, but never got around to it since it is a little bit of a drive away.  Since we had a lovely long weekend with all the time in the world (and the weather was awesome), we put Gus in the car and drove an hour and a half to go see it.

Wikipedia’s definition is this: Enchanted Rock is an enormous pink granite pluton rock formation located in the Llano Uplift approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Fredericksburg, Texas.  Enchanted Rock covers approximately 640 acres (260 ha) and rises approximately 425 feet (130 m) above the surrounding terrain to elevation of 1,825 feet (556 m) above sea level. It is the largest such pink granite monadnock in the United States.

Essentially, its a big pink rock.  And the biggest in the United States.

As soon as we arrived, I wanted to take this path, the path that all the other normal people were taking.

Billy opted for this path.  Which wasn’t a path.  Just a bunch of rocks.

Gus absolutely loved it.  And it wasn’t so bad climbing up this way.

The picture below is actually Enchanted Rock.  We started with the slightly smaller big rock right next to it.

Gus found himself in a little pickle when he got a cactus stuck in his mouth.  And leg.  It was pretty funny.  He was not happy when Billy pulled them out.

And then Billy climbed every boulder we came across.  Gus tried to follow him.

And another.

And another.

Once we got to the bottom of the first rock, we took a little breather and let Gus get some water from the fountain.  Of course, he doesn’t drink it like a normal dog, he attacks it.

The view from the top of Enchanted Rock is amazing, you can see for miles.

Family pic.

Another view.

By now, we were exhausted, so we headed down.  Gus liked jumping down the rocks himself.

But of course we found one more boulder for Billy to climb.

And I even did a mini one.

Then we said goodbye to Enchanted Rock.

And drove to Fredericksburg to try a tasty German beer garden called the Altdorf Biergarten.

It was a really cute restaurant.

With great beer.

Gus enjoyed himself too.

Happy New Year everyone!!!
